Australia skilled immigration visa Requirements

Looking to move to Australia? Have a technical skill you can use for work? There are many options to apply for an Australia visa, but applying for an Australian skilled immigration visa might be your ticket to down under! Here’s everything you need to know about the applicationfor an Australian Skilled Immigration visa.

The Australia Visa Basics

First of all, to apply for this visa, you have to be under the age of 45. Sorry if you’re older, you’ll have to find another way to the land of Oz. But if you meet the age requirement, the next hurdle is whether or not you speak English well enough. My guess is, if you’re reading this article, then you’re probably good to go.

After that, you have to nominate a job that fits your skills in order to apply.

Once you’ve found your job to apply with, you’ll be subject to three different assessments. A skills assessment, health assessment, and a character assessment. I’ll go into more detail about these assessments later on.

There is also a points test that visa applicants have to score a minimum amount to move ahead with the application. The test gives points based off of the basic requirements such as age and language ability, as well as other factors like level of education, overseas skilled labor experience, and even your partner’s skilled qualifications.

Visa Required Assessments

Health Requirements

The health requirements for the visa application apply not just to the individual applicant but also his/her partner and any dependents. The assessment includes a medical examination, chest x-ray, and possible lab tests. If you’re applying for permanent residency, all applicants over 15 will also have to take an HIV test, as well as applicants under 15 that have a history of blood transfusion. Any children under the age of 16 will have to have copies of their immunization records; children age 11 or younger are exempt from the chest x-ray requirement.

If you’re applying as a doctor, nurse, or other medical professional, or if any applicant is pregnant, you’ll have to pass a screening for Hepatitis B and C. Any applicants that have tattoos or piercings will also be tested for Hepatitis B.

If you or your partner is pregnant, chest x-rays should wait to be done until after the birth. This can cause a delay in the processing of your visa application.

Character Requirements

This one is pretty self explanatory. The Australian government just wants to make sure they’re not letting criminals into the country. For the Skilled Migration visa, a substantial criminal record is considered to be sentencing to death or life in prison, a year or more in prison, two prison sentences totaling two years or more, or acquittal on the grounds of insanity. Basically, as long as you aren’t a criminal, never have been, and have never been associated with any criminal activity, you’ll be alright.

The Visa Skills List

There are actually two lists of occupations to get your nomination from. The Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List is for those applicants who are not nominated by an Australian State or Territory Government. However, if you have been nominated by State or Territory Government, you can also choose from the Short-term Skilled Occupation List.

Australia Visa Cost

If you apply through the Australian Government website, the different fees will vary in price depending on which type of visa you need for your particular skilled occupation. The total price, including all your government fees could be as low as $435 AUD for an employer-sponsored application, or as much as over $3,000 AUD for some of the skilled work visas.

If you decide to use advice services, those will add to your overall visa costs. For example, the Australian Visa Bureau offers a free online assessment and a free first consultation, which is a great place to start. After that however, their service charges, excluding government fees and tax, can range from as low as $53 AUD to as much as over $4300 AUD for some of the skilled work visas.

SkillSelect

This is the Australian government’s online system for people looking to move to Australia on a skilled work visa. To start with, applicants have to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect. The EOI is just the first step that applicants must take to signal their interest in applying for the visa.

This part includes a pretty broad range of information including personal information, the occupation you’re applying for, work and education experience, your proficiency in English, and the Skills Assessment for your occupation.

After registering the EOI, applicants will then be visible to Australian employers and state and territory governments for nomination. The EOI remains valid for two years. Once you’ve been selected, you’ll then be invited to apply for a visa, and will have 60 days to do so.

So there you have the basics to get you started on your application for an Australian Skilled Immigration visa. Good luck!
